Can the ACT Aspire Predict Your ACT Score
Can the ACT Aspire Predict Your ACT Score In 2014, a brand new test preparation program called the ACT Aspire replaced the ACT Plan, a pre-test similar to the actual ACT, and ACT Explore. Unlike the ACT, which measures student understanding at a consistent level year after year, the ACT Aspire is designed to reflect the progressive difficulty of each year of school. That being said, can the ACT Aspire predict your ACT score? Read on to learn more about the differences between both tests. An overview of the ACT Aspire test The ACT Aspire, which can be administered beginning in third grade and through 10th grade, is designed to assess both understanding of new Common Core standards and college readiness. The program tests students in five main subjects: math, reading, English, writing, and science. The goal of the ACT Aspire program is to measure student educational growth as an indicator of how well each student may eventually score on the actual ACT. [RELATED: What is the ACT Aspire?] Differences between ACT Aspire test and the ACT There are a few differences between the ACT Aspire test and the actual ACT that are worth mentioning. One of the bigger differences between the ACT Aspire test and the actual ACT is how each is scored. The ACT is scored on a scale from 1 to 36 for each subject, with 36 being the best score. The ACT Aspire is scored on a scale from 400 to 470 for each subject, with 470 being a top score. As you can see, the scale is very different between the two exams, which may make it more difficult to interpret how your ACT Aspire score will translate to the ACT. When students receive ACT Aspire scores, they do also receive an estimated ACT scorehowever, keep in mind that this is an estimate based on their performance on the Aspire (which usually happens before you move on to advanced classes that are tested on the ACT). The best way to truly gauge how you might score on the actual ACT is through ACT practice tests. Additionally, the ACT Aspire and the ACT differ in test format. The actual ACT consists of all multiple-choice questions (with the exception of the optional writing portion), but the ACT Aspire consists of multiple-choice and constructed response (short-answer and long-answer) questions. The idea is that students will be tested using multiple question formats to ensure they fully understand the concepts, even though the actual ACT is not set up in this way. This may affect your preparation. To succeed on the ACT, you may only need to have content knowledge, as well as strategies in place for multiple-choice questions. An ACT tutor or other test prep instructor can also help you determine how you should study, depending on which test you take. [RELATED: What is an Average ACT Score?] Is the ACT Aspire test worth taking? It is evident that the ACT Aspire Test is quite different from the actual ACT. However, the ACT Aspire can still provide valuable information about potential gaps in a students knowledge, due to its cumulative scoring. Students who take the ACT Aspire over several years receive test scores (and subscores) each year, making it easy to monitor their progress and skill level during that time. [RELATED: What Test Do I Take? A Guide to the Testing Acronyms] If you are looking for a way to sharpen your skill set for the real ACT, in addition to studying an ACT test prep bookand other resources, the Aspire test can also be a helpful precursorbut dont put too much weight into your estimated ACT score. A students score and improvement on both tests depends on how seriously he or she takes preparing for each test. If the student uses study strategies tailored to each test format, the chances for success are greater. However, if you are looking for an exam to replicate the ACT exactly, then you may need to look into other test options. If youve received a high score on the ACT Aspire test, dont make the mistake of winging the ACT. The tests are not necessarily comparable. There are a variety of ACT practice tests out there that are professionally written to mimic the rigor of the actual exam. Students can time themselves while taking these practice tests to get a more accurate picture of how they might score on test day. ACT hopes that this new testing program will become the national standard for testing college readiness. It is important to consider all of the differences between the programs before making a decision on which preparation program is best.

The ACT, the SAT, or Both
The ACT, the SAT, or Both ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog If you just started your junior or senior year of high school, then you have a lot of big decisions coming up in your life! In addition to all your tough classes and rewarding extra curricular activities, you have to juggle the college admissions process. After your high school transcript and personal essays, test scores are the final big piece of the college admissions puzzle. So how can you get the score that will get you into your dream school? The big decision to make is whether you are going to submit ACT scores, SAT scores, or both. First, check out the requirements of the colleges you will be applying to. Many schools only require that you submit either an ACT or an SAT score, but some are still strict about which one they prefer. If the choice is yours, then you can consider which test is more suited to your style of thinking and test-taking. Putting some time into deciding which test to take will pay off when you get your highest possible score; there are some big differences between the tests. Subject Areas (not including writing): the SAT only has two key subject areas- quantitative and verbal- whereas the ACT is divided into four sections- reading, English, science and math. The ACT reading and English sections combined basically equal the SAT verbal section, but the SAT is more focused on vocabulary. There is nothing like the ACT science section on the SAT; ACT science doesn't demand any prior scientific knowledge, rather it tests students on their ability to read graphs, charts and tables. So, what that boils down to is that there are more math and vocabulary questions on the SAT, whereas the ACT is more about reading comprehension in a variety of contexts. If you are better at memorizing things likemathematical formulas and the definitions of words, take the SAT. If you are more analytic, take the ACT. Section Break-Down:since the ACT is divided among four subjects, it is broken down into four long sections, each of which is dedicated to one subject. Since the SAT only has two core subjects, it is broken up into many smaller sections. The sections tend to alternate between quantitative and verbal over the course of the test. So, maybe you want to choose your test based on your attention span. If you focus well for long periods of time, then the ACT will be better for you. But if you like to work on different things and switch around to keep your mind fresh, then the SAT is good for you. Those are the biggest differences, but if you're still not sure there's an easy solution. Take a practice test for each and see which feels more comfortable. You may choose the one that you initially score higher on, or you may feel that one is more suited to your style and will be better after your studying is done. And, if you are able to do equally well on both, demonstrating that to schools will definitely work in your favor!

How to Stop Eating Your Feelings
How to Stop Eating Your Feelings pexels.com Almost every student has used food to deal with feelings. Eating your feelings is a common practice for young people to deal with stress, emotions, or any kind of distress. Many studies have been done on the relationship between eating and stress and itâs been found that as stress goes up, so too does eating. While binge eating every once in a while is normal and mostly innocent, if it becomes a pattern it can start to negatively impact your well being. It can begin to make you feel shame, guilt, and out of control with your own body. It can also negatively impact your health since the foods that people often binge are high in sugar and/or fat. Chronic binge eating is a serious problem that affects many, many people. It is categorized as an eating disorder and should be treated as such. If you feel like binge eating or using food to deal with your stress or emotions, there are things that you can do to try and start taking steps to regaining a healthy relationship with food. 1. Identify risk situations One of the most helpful things you can do to try and stop binge eating habits is to identify which emotions or situations trigger a binge. Once you are able to identify situations that cause you to overeat, you can either find ways to remove yourself from the situation or come up with a specific plan for how to deal with those specific situations. 2. Food tracking Food tracking can be a bit controversial when it comes to overcoming eating disorders. Itâs something that works great for some people but can exacerbate unhealthy eating patterns in others. Itâs worth trying out for yourself because it can be very helpful. There are a lot of apps that are available for smartphones that act as food diaries. They help you track what you eat and how many calories and macros the food you are eating has. This can be a great way to structure your eating and keep to a plan that prevents binge eating. On the flip side, counting calories can be extremely harmful and lead to restricting habits which, often, then lead to bingeing. 3. Take time out to eat Plan out where and when you are going to eat. Refrain from eating on the go as this can cause overeating throughout the day. Take the time to sit down at a table and have a meal. By doing this, itâs easier to eat well-portioned meals instead of having too many portions over the course of the entire day. Be mindful about what and how you are eating. Pay attention to the smell, taste, and texture of the food and slow down when you are eating. By eating slower, you feel fuller faster. 4. Donât diet It might sound counterintuitive, but dieting can greatly exacerbate binge eating habits. By restricting yourself, you are more likely to go overboard when you do allow yourself a âcheat meal.â By dieting, you are more likely to take a mile when you give yourself an inch. Instead, change your lifestyle by including lots of healthy foods and donât refrain from indulging in a treat because itâs not your âcheat day.â By treating yourself to a cookie or a slice of cake more often, you lessen the risk of eating an exorbitant amount of calories when you do finally let yourself âcheat.â 5. Exercise Working out has many benefits beyond just burning calories. Working out is also a natural appetite suppressant. Biologically, working out suppresses your appetite so that you donât overeat. Mentally, working out can also be an appetite suppressant because you are less likely to go overboard on the sweets because you donât want to cancel out your workout routine. Working out is also a great way to relieve stress and deal with emotions in a physical way. Instead of dealing with stress through food, going on a run can achieve an even better result than eating 15 cookies. 6. Understand nutrition labels Take the time to learn how to read nutrition labels. Nutrition labels reveal so much about food that you might not suspect by just eating it. Many packaged foods contain more than one serving size, so understanding how to read nutrition labels can help you navigate how much of a snack to eat and which snacks to buy. There are also lots of hidden sugars and fats in a lot of food, which are naturally addictive to our brains. By reading nutrition labels, you can parse out which foods are high in sugar and fat and are more likely to trigger a binge, and which ones arenât. Binge eating is a serious problem for a lot of people. But there are ways to regain your control over your diet. If you donât feel like you are able to take back control over your diet, reach out to a professional to help guide you through recovery.
6 Tips for Effortless Language Learning with Foreign Movies
6 Tips for Effortless Language Learning with Foreign Movies We all love movies. And finding foreign language movies poses no problem in the modern world. Were not cavemen weve got Netflix and Redbox. That means youve probably heard all the buzz about learning a foreign language through movies. Its supposed to be ideal for learning new vocabulary in context, understanding culture and all-around supplementing our language learning in an enjoyable way.Theres just one catch. After a while, watching movies in another language can start to become a chore.Itâs happened to me a few times. My initial enthusiasm with starting a new language had passed. The first excitement that came when I began to understand some bits of movies had been replaced by irritation at all the bits I still couldnt understand. I kept trying to push myself to watch more difficult movies, but every time movie night actually came around I found myself reaching for a movie in my native English. You know what the problem was?Foreign movie night had started to become Too Much Work.I tâs no wonder that Iâd started to lose interest! For most of us, watching movies or TV shows is a reward after a long day of work. If we start to treat it like âyet more work,â then of course itâs going to become a chore. But, never fear!Iâm going to give you 6 great ways to re-engage with your foreign movie night and keep learning without it becoming a chore. 6 Tips for Effortless Language Learning with Foreign Movies1. Become âThat Annoying PersonâAre you one of âthose peopleâ who sit through a movie and give a running commentary on everything thatâs going on in the plot?If youâre not, you should be!Provide a running commentary.Providing a running commentary on a movie in your target language is a great way to get more engaged in the movie and practice your speaking at the same time. The more engaged you get, the more youâll enjoy watching the movie.Okay, so this might be controversial advice, and itâs not applicable in every situation I wouldnt recom mend you start chatting in a movie theater for example. However, most of us watch loads of movies at home. When Iâm travelling I often watch foreign movies alone on a computer. This is a great time to start chatting to the screen and getting really involved with what youâre watching. What to talk about? It might seem an odd question, but what should you say when youâre commenting on a movie?Comment on those things that interest you! The same things you would comment on in your native language.Personally, because I write short films, Iâm interested in the ânuts and boltsâ of a movie and its script. I talk about story structure and technique in English, so thatâs exactly what I talk about in my target language. I practice talking about things that interest me.Maybe you prefer to predict whatâs going to happen later in the movie? Maybe you like commenting on the characters, costumes or the actors?Whatever interests you about the movie, just say it right there when youâre watching it. Get a dialogue going with yourself. Youâll get great practice speaking about those things that really interest. The more you pay attention to details that youd like to chat about, the more youll be getting engaged in the movie. How to avoid annoying othersPeople talk throughout movies more than you might realize. When youâre watching movies with friends youâll often find that people add their own comments. Itâs a communal act! However, in case youâre bothered about annoying people, these 3 tips can help:1. Save the commenting until youâre on your own. I donât always talk when watching movies with others, but when I watch movies alone I really chat a lot. It allows me to try out vocabulary, and I can always rewind if I miss something.2. Only comment on âless important movies.â If youve all been waiting for ages to watch this one special movie, donât feel like you have to talk all the way through it, just enjoy it. But, donât hold yourself back if you have a quick comment (as long as its in your target language!).3. Save all your comments for afterwards. Maybe youâre with a crowd that likes silence throughout movies. Thatâs fine. Just wait until the end and have a good chat about it.2. Quick Tip: Write ReviewsOne quick tip to get really engaged in foreign movies is to write a quick review online after youve finished, in your target language of course. It wonât take you very long (between 20 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on your level of detail) and youll develop some really useful vocabulary to talk about the movie (and others) in conversations.3. Find Familiar FacesWe often think that difficult language is what stops us understanding a foreign movie, but it itâs only half the problem. One of the most overlooked issues when watching movies in another language is the difference in âcultural background.âCultural knowledge can be much harder to acquire than linguistic knowledge. The culture that you live in currentl y or grew up in has given you a rich and varied set of life experiences. These make your view of the world different from the country in which the movie was made, even if you understand all of the vocabulary.Foreign movies often feel strange and unfamiliar because everything about the movie is new the actors, the ânormalâ home life of the characters, the locations, the type of humor, etc.Even when I watch movies from Spain, a country where Ive lived for years, I still sometimes get the feeling that âthis is not my culture,â so I dont get as involved in the movie as I would if it were in English. This challenge can make watching foreign movies quite a chore. How to connect with the countrys movie cultureThe best way to combat this cultural disconnect is to get as involved in the target culture as possible. Here are 3 tips to connect with the culture and enjoy the cultural background of movies:1. Keep your movie choices consistent. One of the quickest ways to feel familiar in the movies culture is to watch several movies with the same actors and/or director. When you start seeing lots of familiar faces or getting a familiar vibe, that feeling of cultural strangeness goes away.2. Watch movies set in your home country, or in the United States. Wherever youâre from, these days weâre all very familiar with the United States because of the far reach of Hollywood. Watching films in your target language with familiar locations is a sure way to feel connected to the cultural background of the movie.3. Watch dubbed movies from your country. Sometimes it all gets too much and you just need a ârestâ from foreign movies. Watching a dubbed movie set in your home country is a great way to feel connected to the culture of the movie, while still learning your target language.4. Original Version vs. DubbingIn general, you should be watching as many movies that are originally in your target language as possible.Original versions are better for a variety of reason s:You learn the real vocabulary in context. You get used to the rhythm of the language in a way that dubbed movies donât allow. You have the added visual stimulus of being able to read the actorâs lips, which you donât for a dubbed movie. You learn the culture as well as just the language. On the flip side, dubbed movies have some advantages:The voice actors sometimes (not always) speak more clearly than the actor on screen. The culture of the movie might be more familiar to you, especially if itâs a US import. The best advice is to âcycleâ watching dubbed movies and original versions. Get the best of both worlds.5. Pick Movies by âDifficulty CyclingâHow do you pick which movie to watch in your target language? Really, its going to vary day by day. Some days youll be thinking, âI just want to watch something easy and relax.I realized that on those days when I felt too tired to watch a film in my target language, Iâd usually reach for the English movies. They were an eas y choice for my tired mind. The thing is that when youâre learning a new language, movies in your native language will always seem an easy choice. But it doesnt have to be like that. The three types of movie difficultyThe relative âdifficultyâ of foreign language movies comes in three different flavors:1. Difficult language. The level of the language is hard for you to understand.2. Difficult cultural background. The cultural background of the movie is unfamiliar or uncomfortable to watch.3. Difficult subject. The subject matter is harrowing and/or the story is complex. When youâre picking movies in your target language, try not to make everything hard for yourself at the same time. When you want to watch something easy, only pick a film thatâs âdifficultâ in one of these categories. If youâre feeling really lazy (it happens) then pick a film thatâs easy in all of these categories, like a dubbed action film or kids animation. This way, you can watch films in your target language even when you donât feel like watching a foreign film. Not sure where to start in terms of difficulty levels? Try out FluentU. FluentU takes real-world videosâ"including clips, trailers and behind-the-scenes commentary from your favorite foreign moviesâ"and turns them into personalized language learning lessons. Its there to help you discover video content thats perfectly suited to your skill level, learning style and personal interests. You can stop browsing Netflix and YouTube for decent moviessimply hop on over to FluentU for personalized suggestions. The site will keep track of your viewing history and figure out the best routes to continual learning and improvement. The best part? Well help you learn how to actively study language through movies. While you watch your chosen content, FluentU adds your newly-encountered vocabulary to flashcards and a running vocabulary list, so you can always go back to practice even more.6. Watch âThe ClassicsâIn any lang uage there are âclassicâ movies which you have to watch. The best way to find these is to search for âtop 100 movies in (insert language here)â into Google. Youll get the best results by searching in your foreign language and reading lists on sites written in that language. Once youve track down a good list, pick a few to start with. Here are some of the great reasons you should watch the classics:1. Theyâre called âclassicâ for a reason. Youâll watch some wonderful movies.2. Each country has its own distinct movie culture. Youâll understand the movie culture in that country far more deeply than you did before.3. You can see whats popular. Youâll begin to recognise some of the best actors in that country.4. Everyone knows about them. Youâll have a sure topic of conversation when talking to someone from the country. Now that you know all the joys and rewards of watching movies in your target language, pick a few cool flicks to start with and get to learning!
Depression in Teens Too High
Depression in Teens Too High pexels.com This, in turn, could be a large part of the reason that suicide rates among teens are as high as they are. Basically, itâs one thing to have depression and report it; itâs another entirely to have depression, report it and go untreated. But no matter the reason, researchers are hell-bent on figuring out whatâs leading to these increased suicide rates in order to curb the trend. According to Dr. Ramin Mojtabai and his colleagues from Johns Hopkins University, âThe 12-month prevalence of major depressive episodes increased from 8.7 percent in 2005 to 11.3 percent in 2014 in adolescents and from 8.8 percent to 9.6 percent in young adults.â In this report, published in the journal Pediatrics, Mojtabai and his colleagues looked at over 170,000 surveys from teenagers and at least 180,000 surveys from adults (the 18-25 age block). According to the report, âEach year almost one in 11 adolescents and young adults have a major depressive episode ⦠The prevalence of these episodes increased between 2005 and 2014.â And whoâs the most vulnerable to such increased rates? Specifically, white individuals. Most specifically, white females. The reason? We donât know at the moment, but the researchers that conducted the study have a few guesses. For one thing, they stated, âAdolescent girls may have been exposed to a greater degree to depression risk factors in recent years.â They continued in saying: âFor example, cyberbullying may have increased more dramatically among girls than boys. As compared with adolescent boys, adolescent girls also now use mobile phones with texting applications more frequently and intensively and problematic mobile phone use among young people have been linked to depressed mood.â Still, doctors arenât reporting that they are treating teenagers for the issue. Basically, this suggests to the researchers that more teens are going without treatment. According to them, âDepression is a sizeable and growing deadly threat to our U.S. adolescent population.â As for the reasons, we can only guess. One of the reasons could be that thereâs a general fear of antidepressants and the harm they do rather than the good. Many believe that antidepressants can increase the risk of suicide, though there isnât actually any direct link between the two. The other potential reason could be that teens arenât actually telling anyone. They could be reporting their depression in surveys, but keeping it to themselves when it comes to family, friends and doctors. According to Dr. Anne Glowinski and Guiseppe DâAmelio from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, this needs to be studied more in-depth, and quickly. In a commentary from the two, they stated, âthe other problem, that of ever-increasing untreated youth depression, concerns all of us at a time when suicide is now the second leading cause of death for adolescents aged 15 to 19 years.â Essentially, depression is a beast that we havenât yet learned how to tackle. Sure, we have antidepressant drugs and remedies, but that doesnât solve the problem when depression goes unreported, which it seems to a majority of the time. The stigma surrounding such antidepressants, for one, needs to be abolished. And for another thing, we need to, as a society, become more aware of the signs, be kinder to people and do our part to help make the world a better place. Even simply being polite while youâre in line at Starbucks on your college campus could make someoneâs day. The little things are more important than you know, and being proactive against such a terrible disease is a great start. In the meantime, on the scientific end, researchers need to come up with a solution thatâs going to last, one thatâs going to significantly decrease those suicide rates and increase those that are being treated for depression. Of course, I suppose itâs easier said than done, but we can take steps now to help move things along.
